Creativity By Stealth, James O'Grady

Creativity as precursor to the process of continuous innovation that is required to survive in the increasingly competitive commercial environment has become a topic on many students' programs of study. This workshop provides an overview of an approach to teaching creativity that draws and builds upon the experiences of students from such diverse disciplines as engineering, commerce, fine arts and political science. Since many students outside the fine and applied arts disciplines do not consider themselves creative and are uncomfortable in situations requiring creativity an indirect approach was adopted. That approach is predicated on not teaching creativity directly but by establishing circumstances that enhance the potential for creative acts to occur, be recognized and be acted upon by the students. Learning styles theory and role models are employed to create circumstances that encourage students to engage what, for many, is an entirely novel experience.
